ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A 62-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday evening at the intersection of N. St. Asaph Street and Montgomery Street, the Alexandria Police Department said.
Officers responded to the intersection at approximately 5:26 p.m. for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the department. When they arrived, they found the woman suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old man operating a black Chevrolet Suburban, remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said. The department's Crash Investigations Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.
Police have not released the identity of the woman or the driver.
The department first announced the fatal crash in a traffic alert at 6:40 p.m. Monday, closing the intersection and urging drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes as investigators worked the scene.
Earlier Tuesday, Tracy Walker, communications manager for the Alexandria Police Department, told The Alexandria Brief that the pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene and that the driver had remained on the scene.
The crash came a little more than two hours after police closed another city street for an unrelated incident. At 4:19 p.m., the department announced that King Street at Hermitage Court had been shut down due to a vehicle fire and urged drivers to avoid the area.
Police did not release additional details about the fire, including whether anyone was injured.
Anyone who witnessed Monday evening's crash or has information is asked to contact Sgt. Jamie Gernatt at 703-746-6834.
The Alexandria Brief will update this story as more information becomes available.
