ALEXANDRIA, Va — A weekend fundraiser at Madison Street Tattoo raised more than $12,000 for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, exceeding expectations as dozens of participants got inked for a good cause.
The "Tattoos for Rescues" event on Saturday, April 25, brought together animal lovers, tattoo artists and community members for a 10-plus hour marathon that saw five dedicated artists tattoo more than 50 participants. The shop donated 100% of the day's proceeds — totaling $12,100 — to the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and also collected physical donations of pet food and supplies.
The fundraiser followed another successful community animal event earlier this month when more than 2,000 dogs and their owners gathered for the annual ALX Dog Walk at Oronoco Bay Park, roughly doubling last year's turnout. AWLA and Madison Street Tattoos promoted the upcoming "Tattoos for Rescues" event during the dog walk, helping build awareness for the fundraiser.
"This event exceeded all of our expectations," said Stella Hanly, CEO of AWLA. "It was truly inspiring to see our community come together in such a unique way to support animals and our 80th anniversary. We are deeply grateful to Madison Street Tattoo, their artists and staff, for their extraordinary generosity."
The fundraiser supports AWLA during a milestone year as the organization celebrates eight decades of serving animals and pet families in Alexandria and Northern Virginia. The league operates the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, an open-admission facility, and works with the city to provide animal care, control and protection.
AWLA's programs include adoptions, spay and neuter assistance, education, community service and outreach aimed at promoting responsible animal guardianship across the region.
